Who governs Kosova now? |
The Government of Kosova is the
body that governs Kosova under UNMIK's overview and it is
elected by the Assembly of Kosova. The current Government of
Kosova is formed by a coalition between the Fatmi Sejdiu
-led Democratic League of Kosova and the Agim Çeku -led
Alliance for the Future of Kosova. The seat of the
Government of Kosova is Pristina, the capital of Kosova.
President of Kosova
Is elected by the Assembly of Kosova. The first post-war
president, who served until his death in January of 2006,
was Ibrahim Rugova. His successor is Fatmir Sejdiu.
President of Kosova Fatmir Sejdiu
Is the Transitional President of Kosova. He was born in
Pakashtica, a village near Podujeva. Sejdiu completed his
primary and high school in Podujeva and went on to obtain a
degree in Law at the University of Prishtina. He obtained a
PhD degree in Law and is a professor at the Faculty of Law
and the Faculty of Political Science of University of
Prishtina. The Assembly of Kosova elected him the President
of Kosova on February 10, 2006 following the death of
President Ibrahim Rugova.
Fatmir Sejdiu was one of the authors of the Constitutional
Framework of Kosova in 2001. He is fluent in Albanian,
English and French.
He lives in Prishtina, the capital of Kosova, with his wife
and three children
Prime Minister of Kosova
Agim Çeku is the head of the Government of Kosova. The Prime
Minister and the Government, which he or she heads, are
responsible for their actions to the Assembly of Kosova, of
which they must always be members. The current Prime
Minister of the Government of Kosova is Agim Çeku, who is
the fourth serving Prime Minister of Kosova.
Agim Çeku
He was born on 29th of October 1960, in Qyshk of Peja.
Primary School has obtained in hometown. On 1975 has
graduated in Secondary Military School, in Belgrade.
On 1984 has finished with excellent success the Military
Academy, respectively the Cannonry Academy in Zare.
From 1984 to 1991 has served within the former Yugoslav
Army, in the Cannonry School in Zare, as squad’s commandant
in the School of Reserve Officers and in the Military
Academy.
Since 1991 to the outset of the 1999 was engaged in several
tasks within the Croatian Army. He started the activity in
the Croatian Army as commandant of mine-thrower battery and
concluded his career in this army with the grade Brigadier
General, as Chief of IV Corpus Headquarters of the Croatian
Army.
On September 1993, during offensive operation “Medacki Djep”
was endured in action.
General Lieutenant Agim Çeku attended in all operations and
fighting in the area of Zare and Like as well as in many
important operations such as: “Maslenica”, Medacki Djep”, “Munja”,
“Oluja”, and “Juzni Potez”.
For the contribution for liberation of Croatia, the
Government of Croatia decorated him with several awards for
excellent merits.
On 27th of February 1999 he leaved the Croatian Army and on
the outset of March 1999 he joined the Kosova Liberation
Army.
On 2nd of April1999, as Brigadier General he was appointed
as KLA Commandant of General Headquarters and in this
position he leaded KLA during the NATO bombing campaign and
during its demilitarization and transformation.
On 19th of September, by a decretal of the Provisional
Government of Kosova he was awarded with the grade of
General Lieutenant.
On 21st of September, he was formally appointed as
Commandant of KPC, whereas his grade of General Lieutenant
was recognized by the international community, as well.
For his contribution to KLA, the Provisional Government of
Kosova awarded him with Order “Adem Jashari”.
NATO Supreme Commandant, General Klark decorated him with
“Decoration for Excellent Performance”
On 10th of March 2006 is elected as the Prime Minister of
Kosova.
Agim Çeku is married and has three children, two boys and
one daughter.
Presidency of the Assembly or Kryeparlamentari
The second post-war and the current Chair of Assembly of
Kosova is Kole Berisha, member of the Democratic League of
Kosova (LDK).
Presidency of the Assembly
In accordance with the Rules of Procedure, the Presidency
meets every working week of the Assembly to prepare the
agenda for the meeting of the next Assembly session as well
as to prepare the agenda for the next coming two weeks.
The presidency makes sure that any substantial motion
supported by six or more Members of the Assembly, is put in
the agenda for the plenary session of the Assembly within
three working weeks since that support is expressed.
The Presidency maintains external parliamentary relations
and other international activities within its powers, in
accordance with the Constitutional Framework.
The Presidency decides based on consensus. In cases when
consensus is not achieved, apart from specified cases, the
Presidency decides based on a majority vote.
